We’re proud of a lot of the things we do at Writer Camp, from the published work that’s developed creekside to the breakthroughs that happen for both our campers and editors during the one-on-one meetings to the late-night dance parties. But the very best thing may be that we’ve made a relaxing retreat that our campers love as much as Team Barrelhouse does. Read on for their thoughts.

Since camp ended two days ago, I have been stalking Twitter pics from the weekend like a lovesick teen. Barrelhouse and Team Godspeed get it just right, which let me just write. And then hang out and talk about writing, with writers who also wrote all day...is it next summer yet?

As a relative newcomer to writing, this was an exceptional experience. No matter how many books and articles the other attendees had under their belts, or what prestigious programs they’d attended, or classes they’ve taught, to a person everyone was welcoming, encouraging and made me feel like I was on their level.

An adult summer camp is what you make of it. However, Barrelhouse Writer Camp makes it easy to have a relaxing or productive, social or antisocial, stimulating or peaceful time. You will find whatever you are looking for at Writer Camp. The grounds are the perfect size for the group of 30+. If you want to hide in the woods and talk to no one the whole time, you can do that. Or, if you want to hang out with every single person at camp and never be alone, you can do that, too! Don’t like the sound of the creek rushing in front of your computer screen? Then, just move to the main hall and work in the company of other writers. Want to stay up late writing under the stars? Luckily, there are plenty of them in central PA! I could not recommend this experience highly enough. I’ll remember Writer Camp for years to come - and would love to attend it again in the future if I get the chance!

Writer Camp was the highlight of my summer. It did a bit of everything for me: time to relax, introduced me to a network of cool and interesting writers, got a ton of writing done, and lots of hammock swinging. I couldn’t recommend more strongly, especially to any writers out there lacking a community. You’ll have one after Writer Camp.

I’ve already recommended Writer Camp to a couple friends this week who asked about it, so here’s the verbatim text of what I told one of them: “Very chill, very affordable. Would recommend to any writer looking for a good, green space to relax around other writers and get some work done on your own schedule.

I wrote 11k words, got helpful feedback from 2 great editors, took 1 hammock nap, participated in 2 useful workshops, sat and chatted writerlife by 3 campfires, swam in 1 lake, and got 100% rejuvenated. This retreat was fantastic.
